June Member of the Month: Sean Gabriel

Our CFME coaches choose Sean Gabriel as June's Member of the Month.
Sean is the first person who is willing to help anyone with anything inside and outside of the box. Sean is always cheering for everyone in our community. He is always at competitions supporting our members and willing to go the extra mile for them. He stepped outside his comfort zone by competing and putting himself out there and succeeding. Sean has a tremendous drive to push through and fight for his goals. The Coast Guard has transferred Sean to Miami and The CFME community is sorry to see him go. We wish him luck on his new adventure.
How did you learn about CrossFit/CFME?
One of my co-workers had just begun doing CrossFit in New London, and he couldn't stop talking about how great the workouts were and how much fun the competitions were. He was also rapidly getting in shape, so I wanted to tryit. While Googling all the boxes available in my area I found out the Meriden YMCA was beginning a CrossFit program, and I thought it was the perfect time to try it.
How long have you done CrossFit?
I was in the first class held in the old building, so almost two years.
What is the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?
I was about 25-30 pounds heavier, smoking 2 packs a day and eating fast food and junk food regularly when I began. I only wanted to do the bare minimum at anything that took effort or dedication. Now, I find myself pushing myself harder and expecting more from myself on everything I do.
What do you like about it?
I love the sense of community, everyone rooting for each other and helping each other out. I love hearing the whole building cheer on the person who's finishing last and putting forth every ounce of energy they have left, because we all know what that feels like.
Favorite CrossFit movement? Least favorite?
My favorite is probably the squat clean. My least favorite has to be muscle-ups, because they are impossible. No matter what anyone tells you, they are impossible (until I get one... then they will be my favorite).
What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out with CrossFit or is too afraid to try it?
Everything we do at CrossFit Meriden can be tailored to your athletic ability to start. We start to learn with plastic pipes weighing less than a pound, and on boxes that are less than the average height of regular stairs. The coaches here are extremely knowledgeable and will help you get you more physically fit than you can imagine, and they will do so with your safety as their top priority.
What do you do when you are not here? (Your profession.)
I am a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Coast Guard. I run the Electronic Support Detachment in New Haven.
Name something about yourself that’s a little known fact.
I had never gotten my driver's license until after I joined the military at 24. The first time I drove a stick shift, it was when my friend and I got transferred from Northern California to Boston.
